Thanks in part Barbenheimer phenomenon Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer was one of the blockbuster hits of 2023. It is also likely one of the best movies of 2023.
Due to Nolan’s deal with Universal, Oppenheimer had a particularly long window between its July 2023 theatrical release and its streaming debut. Now, Peacock announced that the wait is almost over and Oppenheimer will start airing next month.
The official streaming premiere date for Oppenheimer is set for February 16. We had to wait for almost seven months after it hit theaters. The date also allows Peacock to use the upcoming Oscar nominations to further promote the film.
That is likely Oppenheimer will receive nominations for Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and other categories as well. It’s too early to call Oppenheimer a front-runner, but has a real chance to take home a few Oscars.
Christopher Nolan’s movies became events unto themselves that helped drive Oppenheimer to new heights for a biopic. Ironically, it was inadvertently helped by Nolan’s former studio, Warner Bros Oppenheimer’s placement of Barbie on the same issue date. Instead of tanking Nolan’s film, fans flocked to both films.
The Peacock may not be able to recreate this unexpected double feature, but it is also airing several other Nolan films in February.
On February 1, the Peacock will be added to Batman Begins, Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rose, Dunkirk, Beginning, and Nolan’s first breakthrough film, Memento. So fans at home can treat themselves to their own Christopher Nolan film festival if they so choose.
